'Dwelling' Project, Weeks 1-2

So, after visiting certain points around the East London Overground Line we decided on using a space next to Shoreditch High Street Station. Around this space is a run-down looking brick wall which has been abandoned for so long that there is greenery and plants growing out of/on top of it. We, our group, decided to follow this and thus chose the subject of ‘growth’ for our project. After much discussion and a few failed subject choices such as ‘old and new’, ‘old versus new’ etc. we came up with the idea of an installment which helps growth and could possibly grow itself. Here, we used a book called ‘DEVICES’ and this inspired our installment design. We used balloons as a material for the prototype as it can be blown to specific sizes and it changes shape/size with it’s surroundings.

image

We did a few experiments - putting balloons under different weights/situations. One of which was putting balloons into tights..

image

After some discussion and experiments/experimental drawing we made a tester prototype. This model is made using balloons which are filled with seeds, these are of different sizes and attached to the base, we then pulled stockings material over the top and pinned them at different points using a gluegun, string and a nail. At the top we cut small circles at the top of a few balloons and pasted honey on them followed by a hand-ful of breadcrumbs to attract PIGEONS. The point was that pigeons would see/smell the breadcrumbs and honey. They would then peck at the food and thus burst the balloon causing the seeds to be dispersed around the space - making more food available for the pigeons or other animals and the seeds that don’t get eaten may end up growing into new plants. In reality, this installment would be directly on the ground and not on a special base.

image

This experiment showed that the design not only attracted pigeons but also insects, squirrels and even dogs! The larger prototype involved many more balloons and a flatter base.
